GSG Supports Nigeria Customs Service in Developing Command and Staff College Curriculum

Since 2009, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seen massive recruitment efforts for junior officers – the first in 19 years – as well as a critical emphasis on training and capacity building for staff. In the past two and half years, more than 14,000 Customs officers have undergone training in specialized areas relevant to Customs business or in transversal skills. In the words of the Comptroller-General, Abdullahi, D.I., CFR, “the future of the Service must be based on knowledge”.

Building upon this record for capacity building, the CGC fast-tracked the completion of the Command & Staff College at Gwagwalada, FCT. NCS called upon Global South Group to develop a Curriculum for the continuous training needs of Customs officers as they progress in their careers. Based upon World Customs Organization training norms as prescribed by the PICARD Standards, the Curriculum enables NCS to train officers in line with the needs of their career progression, and in the fields in which they specialize. As a Regional Training Centre, the College will also serve as a beacon of excellence, offering courses for Customs officers from Mauritania to Angola.

In the near future, the College will accredit courses towards Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees in Customs management, becoming one of very few Customs Universities in the World, and the only one in Sub-saharan Africa.
